Tourism grants now open!

The Northern Territory Government has announced a number of new and returning grant programs which are available for Territory tourism operators from July 2022.

New programs include a Tourism Accessibility Improvement grant, a Tourism Sustainability grant and a Domestic and International Tourism Distribution grant program to support Territory tourism businesses.

A second round of the Tourism Evening Experiences grant and the Tourism Town Asset program is also open for applications, in addition to another round of the Book Now grant program.

Latest visitor data released

The latest visitor data released by Tourism Research Australia for the year ending March 2022 shows tourism in the Territory has commenced its recovery, growing strongly on the previous year although still well down on pre-pandemic levels. A total of 1.25 million domestic visitors were reported for the NT in the year ending March 2022, a 40% increase compared to the year ending March 2021 and 25% lower than the year ending March 2020.

NT Aboriginal Tourism Committee at AITC

Earlier this month the Northern Territory Aboriginal Tourism Committee Deputy Chair, Mona Liddy and Committee Member, Nova Pomare presented at the Australian Indigenous Tourism Conference held in Cairns. Mona and Nova provided an overview on the NT’s Aboriginal Tourism Strategy 2020-2030 and participated on an Australian Indigenous Tourism Council and committee panel session.

New hospitality training pathway for international students
An online Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) course is providing a new pathway for international students to work in the Territory’s hospitality sector.

The free RSA International Student course has been developed in partnership with Hospitality NT and the Northern Territory Government.

The non-accredited course provides an opportunity for international students to satisfy RSA requirements needed to work in the Northern Territory hospitality industry.

Sustainability for Tourism Industry grants now open

The new Sustainability for Tourism Industry grants provides tourism businesses with an opportunity to reduce their ecological and carbon footprint, benefit local community well-being and positively impact the Territory’s natural and cultural environment. Grants from $5,000 up to $50,000 (with a matched funding contribution) are available.
Applications close 31 August 2022 with projects to be completed by 30 April 2023.

Tourism Accessibility Improvement grants now open

The new Tourism Accessibility Improvement grant provides tourism businesses with an opportunity to improve their accessibility and inclusion offerings for visitors. Tourism operators can apply for grants from $5,000 up to $50,000, with a matched funding contribution required. Applications close 31 August 2022 with projects to be completed by 30 April 2023.

Tourism Evening Experiences grants now open

Tourism operators can apply for grants of up to $7,000 to develop tourism evening experiences in NT regions under this grant program. Applications close 31 August 2022, with the new experience to be completed and operational by 30 April 2023.

Book Now grant program open now

This program will support NT tourism businesses to establish an online booking system integrated on an existing website or establish a turnkey website that features a booking system. Tourism businesses can apply for up to $2,500 with a matched funding contribution required. This is an open non-competitive grant with businesses able to submit applications up to 30 April 2023 or until funding is fully subscribed.

Domestic Distribution grant program open now

This new program is designed to support NT tourism businesses to increase their product offerings in domestic distribution. Funding is available to contract advice to price product, determine distribution potential, assist with planning, packaging, product alignment or undertake domestic sales calls with travel trade. NT tourism operators can apply for grants from $1,000 up to $5,000 with a matched funding contribution required. This is an open non-competitive grant with businesses able to submit applications up to 30 April 2023 or until funding is fully subscribed.

International Distribution grant program

This new grant program is designed to ensure NT tourism businesses are ready for the international tourism market. Funding is available to contract advice to price product with suitable rates including commission, determine distribution potential, receive advice on international marketing plans or to develop an export marketing plan. NT tourism operators can apply for grants from $1,000 to $5,000 with a matched funding contribution required. This is an open non-competitive grant with businesses able to submit applications up to 30 April 2023 or until funding is fully subscribed.

Roadhouse to Recovery grant program closing 18 July 2022

The third round of the Territory Small Business Roadhouse to Recovery grant program is open with a $2 million funding pool available. This round will see regional and remote wayside inns and roadhouses within the Territory able to apply for grants up to $150,000 for infrastructure improvements, with businesses required to provide a minimum 50 per cent cash contribution to the project and grants made on a $1 for $1 basis with grants closing 18 July 2022.

Tourism Grants for Indigenous Business Program Extended

Applications for the $6 million Round 2 Tourism grants for Indigenous Business have been extended to 12 July 2022 (11.30pm ACT time).

Providing funding for individual Aboriginal-owned businesses and community organisations to develop new products, equipment, business planning and marketing.
Grants are capped at $50,000 for businesses and $100,000 for community organisations and close 14 June 2022. The National Indigenous Australians Agency are hosting online information sessions, email [email protected] to find out more.

Export Market Development Grants Program

Applications for Round Two of Austrade’s Export Market Development Grants (EMDG) program will be open from Wednesday 6 July, until Wednesday 17 August 2022.

The program is designed to help Australian businesses grow their exports in international markets and the grants encourage small to medium enterprises to market and promote their goods and services globally. Applications must be submitted via the EMDG Online Portal

Henley on Todd on sale

The Rotary Henley on Todd Regatta will take place on 20 August, with tickets on sale now. A fun, quirky ‘boat’ race held on the dry, sandy bed of the Todd River in Alice Springs, it’s the only dry river boating regatta in the world and attracts people from around the country. This is the event’s 60th anniversary.

Supercars Indigenous Round on track

The 2022 Merlin Darwin Triple Crown drew in more than 40,000 attendances for the inaugural Supercars Indigenous Round from 17-19 June. Supercars were wrapped in Indigenous liveries and several Australian Superbike teams featured Aboriginal artwork in their motorcycle decals or suits and helmets. Deadly Cup Carnival kicks off

More than 250 rugby league players and thousands of fans are gearing up for the 2022 Deadly Cup Carnival on 3 July as part of NAIDOC Week celebrations. Featuring matches between the Indigenous All Stars and the NT All Stars, 14 teams will take part across junior and senior grades at TRL Stadium. Players will sport jerseys designed by Larrakia artist Trent Lee.

The Territory: home of unique events

Territorians and visitors had a massive few days with multiple events delivered in Darwin and Alice Springs from 22-26 June. Events included the NT Writers’ Festival, Top End Pride Festival, the Darwin Symphony Orchestra’s All Out 80s concert, Kindness Festival, NT City2Surf Festival and the Beanie Festival (Alice). Territory favourite Beer Can Regatta returned to Mindil Beach and the Australian National Squash Championships drew players from across the country.
