Livin' Local Photo Competition

Tourism NT is giving two Territorians the chance to win one of two $4,000 NT holiday vouchers in its Livin’ Local NT photo competition. The competition involves Territorians visiting their favourite places, taking photos of their adventures and posting them on their Facebook and Instagram pages, with the two hashtags #LivinLocalNT and #NTaustralia. With another long weekend approaching we’re looking forward to seeing all of your amazing photos from your travels.

A total of 14 Aboriginal owned and operated Territory tourism businesses have received more than $220,000 in grant funding through round two of the Aboriginal Tourism Grant Program.

The Ghan lights up for Parrtjima

Journalists from publications including Vogue Living, news.com.au, Escape, SA Weekend, The West Australian along with five social media influencers with a combined following of more than 500,000 followers were treated to a trip of a lifetime when they travelled on The Ghan from Darwin to Alice Springs to attend the 2021 Parrtjima - A Festival in Light.

Cruise update

The Northern Territory Government supports the cruise industry to restart in the NT subject to health principles for safe cruising being met, to keep Territorians safe. The Chief Health Officer has reviewed the COVID-19 direction regarding cruise vessels entering Territory waters against the national guidelines and has amended the direction to enable two vessels to enter at a time, with up to 150 people on board including crew members.

Experience Co. expands portfolio with major tourism acquisitions

Leading Australasian adventure tourism company, Experience Co (EXP) which offers “mild to wild” adventures, has acquired two well-known Australian tourism entities, Wild Bush Luxury - operator of premium experiences in South Australia and the Northern Territory, and The Maria Island Walk in Tasmania. The Wild Bush Luxury brand includes wildlife and fishing safaris from Bamurru Plains Safari Lodge on the Mary River Wetlands.

March accommodation reports

The Darwin and Alice Springs accommodation reports shows the occupancy rate was up 16 percentage points to 49% and up 19 percentage points to 67% respectively in March 2021 compared to March 2020. Demand was up 41% to 76,000 room nights in Darwin and up 20% to 18,000 room nights in Alice Springs. Room rates and revenue per available room (RevPAR) were also higher for both regions.

Latest visitor data

Combined visitor data as at year ending December 2020 shows 986,000 total visitors to the Northern Territory, who contributed $947 million to the economy through visitor spend.

Value of tourism

The Tourism Satellite Account 2019-20 shows that the total tourism Gross Value Added (GVA) in the NT was worth $1.6 billion, down 28 per cent on the year prior. Tourism accounted for 9.5% of total Northern Territory employment or 12,500 jobs, a 20 per cent decline on 2018-19. The results have been heavily impacted by COVID-19.

Parrtjima 2022 Confirmed

Alice Springs was abuzz with visitors during Parrtjima 2021, which ran from 9-18 April and recorded more than 23,200 attendances this year. Hotel rooms and hire cars were hard to find, particularly during opening weekend, and the success of the event has paved the way for a bumper 2022 festival, which will take place from 8-17 April.
