International Test Cricket returns to the Top End after 22 years
|
The Northern Territory has signalled a bold new era for its visitor economy, unveiling a record-breaking 2026 calendar featuring more than 40 major festivals and events.
In a significant win for the region’s sporting profile, one of the headliners this year is the historic return of international Test cricket. Darwin is set to host three elite men’s matches across the 2026–27 and 2027–28 seasons, a landmark announcement featuring the first international Test match held in the Territory in over two decades.
This blockbuster schedule represents a coordinated effort to drive year-round visitation and solidify the NT's reputation as a premium host for world-class experiences.
The Test forms part of a new multi-match international agreement, which also includes two T20 Internationals scheduled for 2027. Bringing international cricket back to the Top End delivers more than great entertainment, it boosts the local economy, supports tourism, and helps inspire future generations of athletes.
This landmark program of events is expected to attract domestic and international visitors, support local jobs, strengthen the visitor economy, and provide Territorians with increased access to major events. 2026 will be a defining year for the Northern Territory, presenting significant opportunities for tourism and events industry stakeholders.
