Expanded Aboriginal Tourism Grant Program now open

Round 4 of the Aboriginal Tourism Grant Program opened Monday 29 August 2022 with an increased funding pool of $1 million in total.

With previous rounds only open to NT Aboriginal owned and operated tourism enterprises, Round 4 has expanded to enable NT Aboriginal owned businesses and organisations interested in diversifying into the tourism sector, to apply for funding of between $30,000 and $100,000.

NT Aboriginal owned businesses and organisations can apply for support to:
- develop and activate new bookable Aboriginal cultural tourism products or
- build stronger visitor experiences that encourage visitors to travel to the NT and stay longer.

NT Summer features on Today Show

Aussies around the country are seeing first-hand that summer starts early in the Territory with Channel 9’s Today Show weather host Tim Davies beaming live weather crosses on an NT road trip this week.

Kicking off in the Red Centre, viewers’ are seeing the summer like conditions with blue skies against ochre-coloured sand - giving the perfect backdrop to take a dip in an outback swimming hole.

Territory's Top Tour Guides

Central Australian based tour guide Anna Dakin has been crowned the Northern Territory’s 2022 Top Tour Guide and will represent the NT at the upcoming 2022 Australian Top Tourism Awards, to be held on September 13 at Parliament House, Canberra. A freelance tour guide originally from the UK, Anna has worked with a number of tourism businesses in Central Australia and now leads the World Expeditions ‘Six Day Larapinta Trek in Comfort’ which is recognised as one of the Great Walks of Australia. Brolga nominations closing soon

Northern Territory tourism operators are being reminded to get their nominations in for the NT’s official tourism awards, the Brolgas, with nominations closing on 31 August.

The Brolgas recognise and encourage tourism businesses that strive for excellence in all areas of their operations, with 25 national business categories. The Awards are open to tourism operators, industry suppliers and outstanding individuals.

Gold Plate Awards celebrate best in NT hospitality

The 2022 Gold Plate Awards were held at the Darwin Festival’s Sunset Stage on 15 August 2022 with 500 people enjoying the very best of NT’s hospitality with a bit of festival fun thrown in. This year’s Gold Plate Awards were the biggest in the Awards 17-year history with over
330 nominations received from 70 hospitality businesses located right across the Territory. The top Award, the Gold Plate for Restaurant of the Year went to Pee Wees by the Point.

New training requirements strengthen NT's gambling industry

All Territory hospitality workers engaged in the provision of gambling services must undertake refresher training every 3 years following the updating of the code of practice for responsible gambling. The code aims to minimise the harms associated with loss of control gambling through the creation of responsible gambling environments. It sets out the minimum requirements that support services, Northern Territory gambling providers and their staff are to adopt to reduce the harms associated with problem gambling.

Commercial businesses urged to check septic tanks lids are safe

NT WorkSafe is urging all workplaces across the Territory to urgently check that the septic tank lids on their property are safe and secured. In the last eight months, two children have fallen into septic tanks at separate commercial establishments in the Northern Territory.

Airport Roundtable conference in Darwin

Tourism NT, in partnership with Airport Development Group, was proud to host a small and exclusive group of airline businesses for an Airport Roundtable Conference from 8 to 10 August 2022 in Darwin at the award-winning Darwin Convention Centre. Guest speakers included passenger airlines (Air New Zealand, Bonza, Scoot, Virgin Australia), freight carriers (TOLL, Qantas Freight, Tasman Cargo Airlines) and Expedia Group, who shared insights and trends that encouraged discussions on current industry affairs. As the destination host, Tourism NT took the opportunity to showcase the best of Darwin’s leisure and business attractions, including a welcome event at Mindil Beach Casino Resort, and a showcase dinner at the Darwin Club.

The Sustainability for Tourism Industry grants provides tourism businesses with an opportunity to reduce their ecological and carbon footprint, benefit local community well-being and positively impact the Territory’s natural and cultural environment. Grants from $5,000 up to $50,000 (with a matched funding contribution) are available.
Applications close 31 August 2022 with projects to be completed by 30 April 2023.

The Tourism Accessibility Improvement grant provides tourism businesses with an opportunity to improve their accessibility and inclusion offerings for visitors. Tourism operators can apply for grants from $5,000 up to $50,000, with a matched funding contribution required. Applications close 31 August 2022 with projects to be completed by 30 April 2023.

The latest round of the Northern Territory Government’s Event Funding Program opened on Monday, 29 August 2022, to support the events industry. Categories include Community Event Funding, Event Development Funding, Mass Participation Event Funding and Major Event Funding. Multi-year funding is available.
