Tourism NT's latest domestic marketing campaign in market

Tourism NT’s latest domestic marketing campaign, Summer starts early in the NT was launched this month.

The $5 million NT Summer campaign is currently live in market, inspiring Australian’s to seek an early start to summer and to book travel between September 2022 and March 2023 with enticing NT summer travel deals.

Darwin to host global conference

Darwin has been announced as the destination to host the 2023 World Development Conference. Bringing stakeholders from over 20 countries to Darwin to share learnings and discuss ideas and solutions for community development and community work, the conference is expected to attract over 500 delegates, generating $1.7 million in delegate expenditure. Northern Territory Business Events partnered with the Darwin Convention Centre to secure this global conference for Darwin, which will run from 20 -22 June 2023.

Regional Tourism Satellite Accounts 2020-21
Tourism Research Australia's Regional Tourism Satellite Account (RTSA) presents annual data on the direct and indirect economic contribution of tourism in each of the NT’s tourism regions.

Summaries are published for the following tourism regions: Darwin, Katherine Daly, Litchfield Kakadu Arnhem, Alice Springs MacDonnell, Lasseter and Barkly.

Monthly Accommodation Reports

The accommodation reports for Darwin, Alice Springs and the NT for May 2022 are now available. The reports now include data from short term letting along with the hotel sector. The short-term letting market is evolving rapidly and information is sourced from the AirDNA platform which collects data from 490 listed properties in Darwin and 59 in Alice Springs on both Airbnb and Vbro sites in Darwin and Alice Springs

Visitation results YE March 2022

National visitation results for the year ending (YE) March 2022 are now available. The results show domestic visitation reached 1.25 million visitors, who spent $1.5 billion in the Territory in the YE March 2022. While figures remain lower than pre-COVID levels, the data shows tourism is back on an upwards trajectory, with domestic visitors staying longer and spending more per trip than pre-pandemic. International visitation results are showing early signs of recovery. You can download the data through our reports or view results using our interactive dashboard.

Simplified permit system for tour operators
A simplified permit application system is making it easier for tour operators to work in Territory parks and reserves with operators able to access a streamlined permit procedure through the candoterritory.nt.gov.au portal. Tourism operators should use the form when applying for a permit for any type of commercial tour activity in Territory parks and if applying for a concession, can access a new interactive digital map to pinpoint any proposed facility locations or off-path activities.

Farewell to John Di Maria

John Di Maria, Senior Director Tourism Enterprise and Regions South has departed Tourism NT. John has worked for Tourism NT for some 25 years, in a range of key leaderships roles in Central Australia and has been a strong advocate for the region. We wish John all the very best for his future endeavours.

While recruitment is underway, interim arrangements are being put in place to maintain the automony and local decision making authority of the Central Australian team.

Sustainability grants

The Sustainability for Tourism Industry grants provides tourism businesses with an opportunity to reduce their ecological and carbon footprint, benefit local community well-being and positively impact the Territory’s natural and cultural environment. Grants from $5,000 up to $50,000 (with a matched funding contribution) are available.
Applications close 31 August 2022 with projects to be completed by 30 April 2023.

The Tourism Accessibility Improvement grant provides tourism businesses with an opportunity to improve their accessibility and inclusion offerings for visitors. Tourism operators can apply for grants from $5,000 up to $50,000, with a matched funding contribution required. Applications close 31 August 2022 with projects to be completed by 30 April 2023.

Tourism operators can apply for grants of up to $7,000 to develop tourism evening experiences in NT regions. Applications close 31 August 2022, with the new experience to be completed and operational by 30 April 2023.

Book Now grants

Supports NT tourism businesses to establish an online booking system integrated on an existing website or establish a turnkey website that features a booking system. Tourism businesses can apply for up to $2,500 with a matched funding contribution required. This is an open non-competitive grant with businesses able to submit applications up to 30 April 2023 or until funding is fully subscribed.

Domestic Distribution grants

Supports NT tourism businesses to increase their product offerings in domestic distribution. NT tourism operators can apply for grants from $1,000 up to $5,000 with a matched funding contribution required. This is an open non-competitive grant with businesses able to submit applications up to 30 April 2023 or until funding is fully subscribed.

Provides assistance to NT tourism businesses to be ready for the international tourism market. NT tourism operators can apply for grants from $1,000 to $5,000 with a matched funding contribution required. Export Market Development Grants

Applications for Round Two of Austrade’s Export Market Development Grants (EMDG) program close 17 August 2022.

The program is designed to help Australian businesses grow their exports in international markets and the grants encourage small to medium enterprises to market and promote their goods and services globally. Applications must be submitted via the EMDG Online Portal

Masters Games locked in

The Alice Springs Masters Games are confirmed to return to the Red Centre from 14-21 October 2023, and Expressions of Interest are open now for sports that want to be involved. This event always draws a crowd, with hotels booking up and the CBD buzzing.

The Ultimate Festival of Wheels returns to Alice Springs in September, with an extended program that includes an evening of qualifying on the Thursday. So Red CentreNATS will now run from 1-4 September 2022. That makes the $60 Chrome Pass even better value for money!

Parrtjima delivers again

Independent research shows Parrtjima 2022 generated a total expenditure stimulus of $14.7 million, and attracted 13,349 unique individuals. This included almost 7000 from interstate, which was great news for the economy. Of those interstate visitors, just over 70 per cent travelled to Alice Springs specifically to attend Parrtjima.

The Territory has secured the NBL Blitz pre-season tournament for September this year, with all 10 NBL teams set to head to Darwin to take part. Basketball is growing in popularity in Darwin thanks to the Darwin Salties, and the Blitz promises eight days of action! Dates will be confirmed soon.
