Tourism Towards 2030 Conference

Tickets are now on sale for this year's Towards Tourism 2030 Conference. The event, held in Darwin and Alice Springs, provides tourism operators with the opportunity to learn, network and come away with tips that can be implemented across your business.
This year’s theme is ‘leaps in innovation’ which will explore AI, marketing in the Territory and how to activate innovation in your businesses. Tourism Towards 2030 will be held in Alice Springs on Tuesday 27 February 2024 and in Darwin on Thursday 29 February 2024.
Topics featured in the program include:
• Customer focus and activating innovation
• Leap into artificial intelligence (AI)
• The importance of reviews
• Tourism Australia insights
• Marketing the Territory.
Participants will also hear from experts Gus Balbontin and Dave King.
Tickets: $40 including lunch, refreshments and networking drinks.

Qantas announces new Darwin – Singapore route

Some exciting news for Territorians this month with Qantas announcing a new Darwin to Singapore route to commence later this year. The route will initially operate five days per week with the Embraer E190 aircraft, increasing to daily from March 2025. This flight will seamlessly connect with Qantas’ Singapore-London flights, and Europe/Asia through Qantas’ partners, allowing more travel options for Territorians and tourists.
This is great news for the local tourism industry as our international market continues to recover from the pandemic.

Update on Working Holiday Maker conditions

The Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs has announced an extension on the relaxation of visa condition 8547 while consultation on Working Holiday Maker (WHM) reforms is taking place as part of the new Migration Strategy. From 1 January 2024, until further government decisions are announced, WHMs can work for the same employer in Australia for more than 6 months without asking permission if the work is in the critical sector of tourism and hospitality anywhere in Australia.

Latest visitation results out now

In the year ending September 2023, the NT welcomed 1.6 million visitors, up 3.4% on the same period in 2022. Visitor expenditure also increased 9.9% with visitors spending $2.6 billion in the NT. As anticipated, domestic holiday visitors to the Northern Territory were behind the numbers reached in the year ending September 2022 (down -5.3%) as popular overseas holiday destinations became more accessible to Australians with less choosing to holiday at home. The international holiday market is showing good signs of recovery, however is still at 50% of pre-pandemic visitation.

Annual Strategy Report Card released

The latest progress report on the delivery of the Northern Territory’s Tourism Industry Strategy 2030 (Strategy) is now available. Originally released in 2019 and revised last year, the Strategy was co-developed by industry and the NT Government. This is the fourth annual progress report on the implementation of the Strategy with some strong momentum and positive signs of industry recovery evident in the annual results across the NT.

The third annual Strategy report card is now available. The report card details outcomes to the year ending June 2023 towards developing a sustainable Aboriginal tourism sector in the Northern Territory.

INDUSTRY OPPORTUNITIES

Industry Skills Advisory Council NT (SACNT) wants to hear from you!

Local tourism and hospitality businesses are invited to provide feedback and ideas on training, workforce development, skills shortages, and workforce solutions in the NT.
ISACNT is an independent not-for-profit organisation that gathers intelligence on a range of workforce issues and works closely with stakeholders to develop solutions and advice. Each year, ISACNT works with local employers and peak industry bodies, gathering intelligence on hard-to-fill jobs for the annual NT Skilled Occupation Priority List (NTSOPL).

Financial support available - Talking Tourism Forum

Aboriginal tourism businesses can apply for financial assistance to attend the inaugural Talking Tourism Business Forum and the 2023 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in Darwin this year.
The initiative reinforces Tourism NT’s commitment to supporting the development of the NT’s rich and diverse Aboriginal tourism offerings and building stronger visitor experiences that encourage visitors to travel to the NT and stay longer.
Aboriginal tourism businesses can apply for the support by submitting an EOI at Talking Tourism Business Forum EOI.
Applications close on 23 February 2024.

Increase your exposure through Tourism NT famil programs

Tourism NT hosts a series of familiarisation (famil) programs throughout the year with social media influencers, media/journalists and travel trade groups to promote the Northern Territory as a desired holiday destination.
The famil programs provide businesses with invaluable opportunities to have their offerings shared across social media, media publications, to their target market and with international travel distribution networks.
The benefit of being involved in a Tourism NT famil are endless – including increased brand awareness, local and national media exposure and increased sales.

Funding available for new tour guides

Funding available for new tour guides
NT tourism businesses can apply for up to $5,000 to train new tour guides or upskill existing tour guides as part of the Tourism NT’s Tour Guide Ready Program. A total of $50,000 in funding is available to assist with building a capable tour guide workforce in the Northern Territory. The program is designed to streamline training for entrants and offers flexibility.

Grab tickets to Territory AFL games

Footy fans can secure their spot at the Territory’s 2024 AFL matches, with tickets on sale. Gold Coast Suns will take on North Melbourne at TIO Stadium on Saturday, 11 May 2024, followed by a clash against Geelong on Thursday, 16 May 2024. Melbourne Football Club will face Fremantle at TIO Traeger Park on Sunday, 2 June 2024. Independent research shows last year’s matches generated a total combined expenditure stimulus of $10.4 million.

Australia’s favourite sprintcar event, Chariots of Thunder, gets pulses racing each year in Darwin, with nominations and tickets on sale now. In great news for motorsports fans, this year’s event takes place from 12-14 September at Darwin’s Northline Speedway and includes a revised three-day format. This follows on from the highly successful 2023 event, which attracted 16,644 attendees.
